Eggs are pipping! Eggs are pipping! We should have babies tomorrow! Humidity in incubator is stable for hatching, my fingers are crossed, & I’m trying my best to keep the incubator closed!! I have my alarm set to get up early with the chickens.
Here are the newest members of the farm. We have six new baby Golden Sebright Bantams.

baby Sebrights
The yellow chicks are random males the hatchery sent to keep the Sebrights warm on their trip. They will be feed out and put in the freezer. There are 10 of them! We have no idea what breed(s) they are. When HL was home he was busy building a new chicken coop for our bantam breeds we are adding to the farm. In July we are traveling to South Louisiana to visit two chicken breeders. One breeds beautiful Golden Sebrights and the other raises the up and coming breed the Serama. The incubator is busy here and our frist hatch is due on June 1st. Keep your fingers crossed for a great hatch.
I know I have been very quiet around here. Truth is I really don’t have much to say unless you want to hear me whine and complain about a bunch of stuff. Now for some semi good news. We have a new baby on the farm. He is a Buff Orpington/Barred Rock cross. We have no idea what happened to the rest of the clutch of eggs. It looks as if a big, nasty chicken snake busted up the nest. Eggs were missing and mom had abandoned the rest of the eggs. I think she felt she needed to protect the first chick that hatched and give up on the rest.
I am a bit disappointed especially since I’m not 100% sure what happened. We are going to try this hen again and make sure she is secluded from the rest so we can better determin her broodiness. However, she is being an excellent mom and the little guy is doing great.
There are some exciting things happening around here!
This little lady, Sue is now setting on approximately 20 eggs! They are not all hers. She is going to be a surrogate for the entire flock. Susan told me today to run out and count how many. Good thing I did not stick my hand in there. She’s a mean one. I couldn’t get her to budge and she attacked the grain scoop. It will just have to be a surprise unless I can catch her sneaking some water one day. In 21 days (give or take) we will have BABIES!
This handsome couple, Johnny & June, are also expecting. June is setting on 14 eggs as we speak and to think someone at Backyard Chickens told me not too expect my Mallard/Khaki crosses to set. As if!
We are very excited here at the farm this is the first time we’ve had any of our chickens or ducks set. I’m so proud of them. At least someone around this place will have babies.
Our household has went from 1 child to 4. Help me! My brother and sister in law are moving and I have their kiddos. My brain is fried, I am exhausted, & I want to run and hide. I don’t know how mommas of large families do it. Jeeze you ladies must be walking zombies.
So much has taken place in our lives and in the lives of those close to us. I have felt the need to be there with them instead of here on the internet. I really hope that once school starts and HL returns home our lives will resemble once again so sort of peace and order. Until then I will be in a dark corner silently rocking back and forth until HL comes home to save me.
